Frank Tore Larsen has extended his lead in the Norwegian Rally Championship, thanks to overall victory in his Ford Fiesta R5 on the recent Aurskog-Holand Rally – Larsen’s second on Kumho tyres.
The opposition was tough and included the 2013 Junior World Champion Pontus Tidemand in a Fiesta WRC and Eyvind Brynildsen in a Fiesta RRC. Larsen posted second fastest times on the first two stages, just a few seconds shy of Tidemand in the more powerful WRC Fiesta. As the event progressed, the battle with Brynildsen could not have been closer and became the fight for victory when Tidemand was forced to retire with technical problems.
Larsen started the final stage with a lead of just 10.7 seconds, but in a typically committed drive on the extremely narrow and difficult course, managed to pull out a further 6.1 seconds to win the event by 16.8 seconds. He employed a mix of Kumho R800 and R900 gravel rally tyres during the event, finding the R800 notably good on loose surface stages or hard roads topped by a layer of sand. The R900 came into its own on mixed surfaces of hard packed gravel and asphalt. An enthralling YouTube video leaves you in no doubt just how hard Larsen was pushing throughout – see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXG2nFuoLZY.
Commenting on this latest success, Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson said:
“Frank reckons this was perhaps the best result he has delivered to date – it was certainly a good showcase for our gravel rally tyres, on which he not only won but provided valuable technical feedback.”
The next round of the championship is the Rally Hedemarken in the region of Hamar on September 20.
