Marty McCormack and co-driver Phil Clarke are on a roll. They entered last Saturday’s (June 22) inaugural DMACK Carlisle Stages rally in the lead of the West Wales Rally Spares R.A.C. Rally Championship, courtesy of a hard-fought second place in round one and outright victory in round two. Six stages totalling 44 miles later, they had collected another trophy and further extended their series lead. The rally is a new addition to the calendar. Organised by the Roger Albert Clark Motor Club, it featured stages around the Newcastleton and Kershope area of the Scottish borders. McCormack’s trusty Kumho-shod MKII Escort was the car to beat from the outset, establishing an eight second lead over the similar one of rivals Nick Elliott and Dave Price on the first stage alone. By the time they headed for service at the halfway point, they had extended the gap to 19 seconds. Reported McCormack:

“No problems at all, I stayed on the road and it was all good; like a Carlsberg morning.”

The afternoon brought heavy rain, but changed little up front, with the McCormack/Clarke Ford eventually finishing 36 seconds clear of the Elliott/Price one and with a nice little cushion at the top of the leader board prior to round four of the six round series – the Neath Valley Stages on August 10. Commented Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson: “This was another great drive by Marty, who is clearly in the groove both with the Escort and our gravel tyres. We wish him and Phil all the best for the remaining rounds.”
