Having been the sole supplier to the F1 feeder series Auto GP since 2012, we have from the beginning aimed at providing drivers experience and familiarity with the type of tyre they would face within Grand Prix racing. However we have now upped our game.
This season the tyres created are the most comparable to F1 tyres yet, with the same diameter, ie size 660-13 – 245mm wide at the front and 325mm at the rear and a softer tyre compound. Whereas last season’s tyres were closest to F1 specifications in terms of size but with a different diameter front to rear.
Three tyre compounds including a Kumho Medium, Kumho Soft and Kumho Super Soft were recently tested at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia.
The circuit features a succession of tight hairpins, fast corners and straights, so was the perfect setting for our tyres to be put to the test.
Kumho’s European Motorsport Manager Steve Thompson said “Auto GP is the nearest formula to F1 in terms of speed and downforce, and the cars even compete on some of the same international circuits. It is therefore logical to make the tyres as close to Grand Prix specification as possible, thereby guaranteeing the drivers invaluable experience for their futures. It’s no bad thing for us to be developing and making tyres equivalent to those used at the pinnacle of motorsport either.”
The similarities to the F1 don’t end there, as Auto GP qualifying is now based on a knockout format allowing the fastest drivers to compete for pole position through spilt 30 minute sessions with Q1 (20 minutes) and Q2 (10 minutes) segments.
With 16 fierce rounds taking place at 8 tracks around the world, Auto GP attracts world class talent and will commence April 12th/13th at the Moulay El Hassan Circuit, Marrakesh, Morocco.
